Teaching!

Libraries, grade schools, middle schools, high schools, universities, clubs, and other private groups have hired me to come in to give talks, and teach about comics. I have traveled across the state of Michigan, and my talks have taken me to such places as Tennessee, Ohio, and Illinois. I’m willing to travel anywhere that there is a love of comics as literature and as art.

Public Speaking

Have a group that is yearning to learn? I have given talks about the History of ComicsBreaking Into Comics, and Visual Storytelling. If you have an idea on a different lecture better suited to you specific needs (i.e. a woman’s library wanting a lecture about famous female cartoonists) I am willing to put one together.

Teaching

I have taught Kindergarten through Twelfth grade Students, working for a week to 3 weeks about Visual Storytelling and Comics

What People are saying…

I think that Jesse is such a talented professional and the students took to him right away. He provided a new and interesting twist to looking at art in a different and valid way.–Margie Luttrell Webb School

The kids were definitely able to relate to him and his art right away and laugh. There’s not always humor in art, but there is in Jesse’s work. The students were excited to see Jesse and show him their own work. I’m confident that their time with Jesse will be among the highlights of their Middle School experience.– Noel Redmon Webb School

Students At Erickson elementary were dazzled and inspired by professional comic artist Jesse Rubenfeld. He took students through character development first, easing their fears of drawing perfectly like him by suggesting common everyday objects that could become characters. Jesse made the  transition to story development by introducing three of the arenas of comics; choice of frame, choice of moment and choice of flow.  Students drew their comics. Then they were treated to using real ink and pen nibs after Jesse demonstrated how he inks his comics. He worked on an actual comic for publication in front of the class.  Students really enjoyed their time with Jessee and learned a lot about the joys of being a comic artist and writer. —Kathy FiskErickson Elementary School
